Pietermaritzburg-based humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, says it hopes the spreading protests in Syria - calling for the release of South African photojournalist, Shiraaz Mohamed - will help secure his safe return.
Mohamed had been on assignment in the war-torn country - when he was kidnapped a week ago.
He had been making his way to the Turkish border - when he was captured.
Turkish officials have promised to help find him.
Protests broke out in Syria on Sunday - with locals calling for his release.

Imtiaz Sooliman is with the Gift of the Givers - the humanitarian group that's been leading search and rescue efforts.
"The protest action is now spreading to other parts of Syria - besides the city of Darkoush - and people are taking posters of Shiraaz and pasting it all around the country, because they want more people to know what he looks like, and to help us in the search for Shiraaz," he said.
