Bridge collapse in Joburg

At least two people died when the scaffolding of the temporary Grayston Bridge over the M1 highway caved-in late yesterday afternoon.

23 other people were injured, some of them seriously.

City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau briefed the media at the site.

He described the collapse as one of the most unfortunate construction incidents in South Africa.

''We ourselves as the City of Johannesburg have appointed engineers to establish the reasons for the accident that has occurred,'' he said.

Tau says if anyone is found to have not done what they were supposed to must account.

''Corrective action will be taken. Anybody who has not done their work in accordance to what the requirements are, corrective action will be taken,'' he added.

Construction company Murray and Roberts says they are investigating the incident.
