Presidency announces December 27 will be a public holiday
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
President Jacob Zuma has declared the 27th of December a public holiday, the presidency announced today.
It results from a request by the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa), who complained that workers would only have 11 public holidays this year - instead of 12 - as Christmas Day falls on a Sunday in 2016.
According to section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act 1994: "whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday."
However, as the 26th of December, 2016 is also a public holiday (Day of Goodwill), the two dates overlap.
“The declaration of the 27th December as a public holiday will ensure that workers are not unduly disadvantaged because of this unusual event and are still entitled to their 12 paid public holidays,” the presidency said.
