Potential for virus outbreak high in Durban, JHB, Cape Town: Prof Karim
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
World-renowned AIDS researcher and scientist, Professor Salim Abdool Karim says community transmission is what South Africa is trying to control.
Explaining the progress the country made, before and after the lockdown, he says South Africa hasn't followed the expected epidemic curve.
Compared to other affected countries, ours is unique and isn't rising sharply thanks to interventions.

Karim, chair of the advisory committee on COVID-19, says if the virus hits highly populated communities, they fear it will be uncontrollable.
"Our three biggest concerns are in the three high-density hubs, where we have a lot of infections and where the potential for spread is high."
"It's high because you have so many people with the virus and we have so many communities where it could be seeded and where it could spread."
"So our big concerns are around the greater Johannesburg, Cape Town and eThekwini areas. Those are the three hubs. If we start seeing community transmission at a significant level, those three hubs are going to be the most likely places where it will start."
Karim's been speaking at a meeting with the Health Minister and industry experts in Durban last night.
