Popcru calls for stricter gun ownership laws
Updated | By Benedict Ngwenya
The union briefed the media in Johannesburg earlier today on the recent spate of police killings in the country.
In the latest incident, a police officer was killed by alleged robbers in Johannesburg's Orange Farm yesterday, bringing the number of officers killed nationally in the past week to seven.
Earlier this week, President Jacob Zuma said the killings should re-open the debate on whether South Africa should be a gun-free country.
He was speaking in Katlehong, east of Johannesburg, after visiting the family of another police officer who was shot dead south of Johannesburg last week.
POPCRU's Richard Mamabolo says the country can no longer afford multiple gun ownership.
"We also feel that the private security firms have got three times the number of guns that the police in the country and the army have and some of the guns that have been lost from within the private firms are worrying. These are the guns that we believe contribute to the current challenges we face in South Africa. We feel that they should be regulated as well," he said.
More than 50 police officers have been killed since January this year, an increase of about 10% compared to the same period last year.
