POPCRU calls for enhanced warden protection
Police union, POPCRU is calling for safety measures to be ramped up for prison wardens, after an alleged attack at a KZN facility.
Gugu Mbatha was allegedly attacked by a prisoner during a sporting activity at the Ncome Correctional Centre in Vryheid last year.
It is understood that the officer was followed and grabbed while she was making her way to her quarters.
A scuffle broke out and Mbatha suffered injuries, including a broken tooth.
On Monday, the suspect appeared in the local magistrate's court.

Members affiliated with POPCRU held a picket outside.
Spokesperson, Nthabeleng Molefe says the inmate is already serving time for rape.
"The Department of Correctional Services needs to make sure that they take good care of the members.
"When we have sporting [activities], you must make sure that you have sufficient manpower to be able to guard the inmates [to ensure] that there is nothing wrong happening."
