KZN political parties welcome declaration of state of disaster

Political parties in KwaZulu-Natal have welcomed Premier' Sihle Zikalala’s decision to declare a state of disaster in the province.

The declaration follows the violent unrest earlier this month that caused billions of rands in damage to businesses, as well as public and private infrastructure.

Zikalala said on Thursday the resolution was taken during a provincial executive council meeting earlier this week.

The ANC's Nhlakanipho Ntombela says it's a move that will benefit the province.

“It will require extra resources. It will require even assistance by national government. More so, it will require the provincial government to reprioritise its programmes and its budget.”

The DA's KZN leader Francois Rodgers is also hopeful.

“The province doesn’t have the necessary finance capability to build back the economy that was destroyed. The loss of income and the loss of jobs is certainly going to have a long-term impact.

“So one would hope that National Treasury would ensure that we get back to were we were prior to two weeks ago.

This while the IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa believes it is a necessary intervention.

“It will be difficult for the province to be back on its feet unless this intervention is done, in the interest of the looting-spree and the destruction of property.”
