Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union has called for the immediate removal of the Correctional Service National Commissioner Arthur Fraser over surges in covid-19 infections in prisons.
The union says as understaffing and overcrowding continue to increase so too have Covid-19 infections.
Last week the department of justice and correctional services said there were 9 892 reported Covid-19 cases countrywide.
It reported a total of 192 deaths, of whom 133 were officials and the rest inmates.

The union's Richard Mamabolo says recently with COVID-19, there are a lot of challenges.
"Part of the decisions also taken is us looking into where we can ensure our staff compliment does not get the levels of infections it has currently."
"We think It's about time it starts now, there are 32 staff members and 32,000 members we have to look after a prison population of 138,000. SO it's quite tough for those who are there," he says.
