Newswatch arrived on the scene on Thursday afternoon to find the residents of the block of flats standing outside and looking up at the 6th floor where detectives made the drug bust.

It's understood a suspect had been on the radar of the KZN Drug and Firearm Unit for some time.

On Thursday morning, they executed a search warrant at the man's official residence and where he lives with his wife and children, not far from the apartment block.

Officials say they found nothing at the home.

Further investigations led to the flat in the middle of a quiet residential area.

It's understood the suspect had been renting it for a year.

Inside, officers found a lab where rock cocaine was being made and heroine being packaged.

Mandrax tablets were also found on the premises.

Drugs with an estimated street value of R1.3 million have been recovered.

The suspect has been arrested.

KZN police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, arrived at the scene on Thursday afternoon and commended detectives on their work.
