Anton Chetty had been at the club with friends when he was struck on the head with a bottle on Sunday morning.

His friend Rowen Kaniah says he was standing a few metres away when he saw someone hit Chetty next to the dance floor.

''After he hit my friend, my friend lost his balance. Once he hit him, this guy was still going to hit him again after striking him with a bottle on his head. The Vacca Matta bouncers grabbed him and kicked him out of the club.

''They came and asked Anton if he needs assistant or medical attention. My friend and I went outside to try and catch these guys but they had already left. I then went back inside the club Anton told me he wanted to go,'' he said.

Chetty sustained a small scratch on his eyebrow but after he got home, he complained of pain and collapsed.

Doctors at Albert Luthuli Hospital confirmed he had bleeding on the brain and required an emergency operation. Chetty remains in a critical but stable condition in ICU.

A 22-year-old suspect has already appeared in the Durban Magistrates' Court on a charge of attempted murder and is due to apply for bail next week.

Management at Vacca Matta say it's been assisting with the case and has supplied statements and CCTV footage of the incident.
