A Richards Bay motorist says traffic was severely affected.
"I noticed the burning tyres and when I got back home I said to my husband that I didn't know what was going on, but the traffic was chaos. He said to me they just confirmed with his workplace that people who do work for them should be alerted. There were burning tyres on the road and no vehicles were being let in or out of the area," she said.
In Verulam, disgruntled workers also barricaded roads with burning tyres.
Traffic was affected in the vicinity of Nyala and Glasgow roads.
