Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
Police are monitoring areas in and around KwaMashu and Ntuzuma, north of Durban.
SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says residents embarked on an illegal strike which led to the looting and burning of a number of shops owned by foreign nationals.
"Last night, as from 6pm, community members of KwaMashu embarked in an illegal protest that started from Dumisani Makhanya Road. It spread to other sections in KwaMashu and Ntuzuma," he said.

Community members believe they're responsible for the abduction of children from schools even though Education officials have dismissed these abduction messages as a hoax.
They've also asked people to refrain from sharing them on social media. Zwane says they remain on high alert.
"We have opened a case of public violence and there are no arrests made at this stage," he said.
