Police comb scene of CIT heist on N2
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
Durban police are still processing the scene of Thursday morning's cash-in-transit heist near KwaMashu.
Robbers bombed a security van on the N2 north, and made off with an unknown amount of cash.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says a police officer, driving an unmarked car behind the Fidelity van, came under heavy fire.
He says the gang was travelling in separate cars.
"The police officer, who was on his way to an early operation in Inanda, and wearing his protective gear, tactically returned fire and found his way out of the vehicle and took cover.
"The officer also managed to stop other motorists who could have become unsuspecting victims of the brazen criminals who went on to blow the truck open and made way with an undisclosed amount of money. Cash in transit security guards were left unharmed although they were robbed of their three firearms, one of which was a rifle."
Meanwhile, traffic is heavily backed up, as the N2 north remains closed to motorists.

Other major routes were brought to a standstill.
Marshall Security's Andreas Mathios is near the crime scene.
"I am standing on the bridge that goes to Riverhorse Valley. I am watching trucks driving contra-flow back towards Queen Nandi Drive, which is on the northbound carriageway. The crime scene needs to be processed. There are about six to seven trucks that need to be turned around including members of the public."
He says the traffic backlog's reached Durban from both the west and eastbound carriageways, affecting the M4 south into Durban and the N3 near Spaghetti Junction.
Traffic is being redirected via the M19.
"People who have flights to catch need to take alternative routes, either go through the back road, Dumisani Makhaye Drive, or if they can get into the back end of KwaMashu and go around the back route towards Tongaat to get to the airport.
