A Phoenix community is rallying behind an eight-year-old boy with a brain tumour, after doctors told his family he has limited time.

Ethan Maharaj was diagnosed after his family noticed a squint in his eye. Over the past two weeks, his speech and ability to do everyday things began to change.

His condition worsened last week.

The little boy is now at Albert Luthuli Hospital, waiting for an MRI, while his family faces the devastating news that their time with him may be limited.

Ethan’s mother, Kelly Nair, says the diagnosis came as a shock.

”On Monday, we get the news that Ethan has a brain tumour on his brain stem, which is somewhere that no one can operate. There is no treatment for it. Basically, it's a no-go zone.”

She says Ethan is hoping to get back home and return to the activities he loves.

“ Ethan is, like every mother will say, he has a heart of gold. As small as he is, the first thing he says that when he gets better, he's gonna go out and feed the poor.”

Community support

Nair says the family never expected Ethan’s illness to bring such an outpouring of support from the community.

”The only thing we can do now is pray. He knows he's loved. He knows that there's so much of people, you know, praying for him and, and waiting for him to come home. He knows that.”

The community is now coming together in prayer, hoping for a breakthrough, and calling on all groups to join in.
