Motorists to pay more at the petrol pumps in September

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources says higher international oil and petroleum product prices are driving the increases.

Motorists will be paying more at the petrol pumps in September.

Both grades of petrol will increase by R1.34 a litre, while diesel is set to jump by up to R3.14 per litre.

"Diesel 0.05% sulfur will increase by R2.93 per litre. Diesel 0.005% sulfur will increase by R3.15 per litre. Illuminating paraffin for wholesale will increase by two hundred and thirteen cents per litre," the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced.

Geopolitical tensions add pressure

Spokesperson for the department, Lerato Ntsoko, says the increases have been driven by higher international oil and petroleum product prices.

She adds it comes amid US-Iran tensions, uncertainty over oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and supply shortages linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including importation costs."

A higher slate levy has also added to the increases, despite a slight strengthening of the rand against the dollar.
