Petrol price decrease on the cards

There is some welcome news for petrol users, but no relief for those who use diesel and paraffin.

The Automobile Association of South Africa is expecting the price of petrol to drop by about 16 cents a litre this month.

It says month-end unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund points to a 30 cents a litre increase for the price of both diesel and paraffin.

The AA says the Rand's gains against the US Dollar have helped, but there were substantial jumps in the landed prices of the two fuels - unlike petrol - whose landed price remained unchanged.

The AA says the recent drop in international oil prices is cause for optimism.

"If the Rand maintains its current trajectory of relative stability, this could augur well for the fuel prices as the Christmas season approaches.," said the AA in a statement.

However, the motoring body cautioned against premature celebration.

 "2018 has been one of the most tumultuous years in history for South African fuel users, and the economy is still fragile and easily spooked," it concluded.

The Energy Department is expected to announce November's fuel prices in the coming days.
