Pedestrian deaths on the rise in KZN
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Arrive Alive has sent out a warning to pedestrians after statistics released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation showed that around 40% of fatalities this festive season, have been pedestrians who have been knocked over.
Arrive Alive's Johan Jonck referred Newswatch to a survey suggesting people walk on the side of the road because of better lighting.
''One of the reasons why pedestrian bridges are not used enough, is the fact that people are afraid of what's waiting for them on the other side of the pedestrian bridge.
''So crime has a bit of an influence, but we also should not neglect the influence of alcohol. Most pedestrians go onto the road well intoxicated, especially at night, and run across the road and that's a huge problem,'' he said.
Jonck urged pedestrians to wear brightly coloured clothing and not to cross highways as it is illegal to do so.
