Pathcare is the latest major laboratory to reduce the price for the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests to R500.

This follows Bonakele stating during Sunday's briefing that the case against Pathcare, to reduce its prices was still ongoing as they had not agreed yet.

However, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Pathcare, Dr John Douglass, says they have joined the other laboratories in reducing prices of its PCR test.

“In terms of the 12 December 2021 announcement by the Competition Commission regarding the settlement with Ampath and Lancet laboratories to cut the prices of their COVID-19 PCR tests to R500 including VAT, PathCare would like to advise that it has also agreed to drop its prices of its COVID-19 PCR tests in line with the agreements reached.”

The price reduction follows an investigation by the commission which was triggered by a complaint lodged by the Council for Medical Schemes in October 2021, that the prices were too high.
