Parents urged to stay vigilant after two near-drownings in KZN
Two children are recovering after separate near-drowning incidents in Scottburgh and Salt Rock. Emergency services are reminding parents to closely supervise children around swimming pools and other bodies of water during the school holidays.
Parents are being urged to be aware of their children's whereabouts this holiday after two near-drowning incidents in KZN. A five-year-old girl got into difficulty while swimming in a hotel pool in Scottburgh on Monday afternoon.
"On arrival of paramedics, they found a five-year-old female in a serious condition after she had been submerged for an unknown period of time.
"She was pulled from the pool, and then CPR was performed on her by on-site clinic staff, where they successfully resuscitated her, and she was then transported to hospital,” said IPSS Medical Rescue's Kelsey-Jae Meyrick.
She said medics responded to another incident on the north coast.
She said a three-year-old boy was pulled from a swimming pool in Salt Rock after being submerged for nearly 10 minutes. Meyrick says medics stabilised the little one and transported him to hospital.
"He was also pulled from the pool by bystanders and a neighbour performed CPR on him, which was successful."
"During the holiday season, we urge all parents to be aware of where their young children are are at all times and be especially wary if there are bodies of water that are not securely fenced off during these periods where they may be wandering around freely and playing."
