Over 50% HIV positive people 'unaware of status'

The CEO of the Hillcrest Aids Centre, Olivia Myeza says more than 50% of people living with HIV do not know their status.

She is challenging people to get tested today as communities across the globe mark World Aids Day.

"We need to understand that as people living in KZN. HIV is impacting every single workplace, every single church, every single family in one way or another.

"To believe anything other than that is to tell ourselves a lie. This is the reality. Statistics have backed this up," she said.

Myeza says the centre will hold a candlelit vigil to remember those who succumbed to the disease.

"We're going to light one candle for for every patient who's passed away in the respite unit in the past year and then all staff members and patients who are in the unit are going to have an opportunity to light a candle for someone that they love that they have lost to HIV in the past year," she said.
