More than 200 drunken drivers have been arrested in the province since the first of December compared to 91 around the same time last year.

South Africans against Drunken Driving are urging motorists to refrain from driving under the influence.

The organisation's Caro Smit believes the figure would be higher if more officers were out on field.

''When the Automobile Association conducted a survey of people drinking and driving at night, they get 1 out of every 16 drivers with over the limit.

''Therefore we should catch more than 200. So the number should be ten times more than what they have caught,'' she said.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old taxi driver is likely to spend Christmas behind bars after being nabbed while driving at 171km per hour, in a 100km zone in Mandeni earlier today.

This is the second highest recorded speed in the province this month, after another driver was caught driving at 185km per hour, also in a 100km zone.
