Organisers say entries for the 91st Comrades Marathon will close either when the 20-thousand mark is reached or within three weeks.
For the next race, which will be the 45th 'down-run' in the history of Comrades, nearly 13500 South Africans have already entered.
About 200 Rest of Africa athletes will be running so far while there are currently 900 international runners from more than 60 countries.
The 2016 race will take place on Sunday, the 29th of May from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
