Premier Ntuli ‘concerned’ by health breaches at Pietermaritzburg businesses
Dozens of undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during joint operations involving police, labour and immigration officials on Tuesday.
The provincial government says it is concerned about the growing number of businesses flouting health and hygiene regulations.
Dozens of undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during a law-enforcement raid on businesses in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.
Premier Thami Ntuli joined police, labour, and immigration officials during announced store checks in the provincial capital.
Ntuli says a number of stores were found operating in areas that are not conducive to food outlets.
"It's a situation really which is worrisome to see what our people eat. You look at the conditions, the non- compliance in terms of the buildings. There are no plans submitted to the municipality. They simply just build."
Ntuli also criticised the poor conditions workers are subjected to, highlighting issues such as low wages and long working hours.
"Our people, they're earning R100, only R100 a day. You just imagine when you ask them when do they knock in and off. They will tell you that [it’s] 6am."
