The National Prosecuting Authorities (NPA) in the Free State has welcomed two life sentences handed to the Danish arms dealer, Peter Frederiksen, in the Free State High Court.

One sentence was handed down for conspiracy to murder his wife, Tshidi Molise, in October 2015 in Lesotho.

The other life sentence is for the rape of a minor from Lesotho.

In 2017, 60-year-old Peter Frederiksen was convicted of 36 charges by the Free State High Court.

Ferderiksen was found in possession of female genitalia before his arrest.

Provincial NPA spokesperson Phaladi Shuping says it has been a long road.

"From the start of the trial we have been of the view that the only appropriate sentence would be life imprisonment considering there is a child (involved). There is also a family in Lesotho that lost a family member.

"We hope that they find peace in knowing that the accused has been now removed from our society."

Judge Johann Daffue yesterday also sentenced Frederiksen to an additional 51 years in jail.

He was also fined R5000 or a sentence of six months behind bars.

This relates to charges of the possession and production of child pornography, contravention of the Fire Arms Act, fraud and corruption.

He will serve the sentences concurrent to the two life sentences.
