NPA threatens legal action after leaking of VBS affidavit
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The National Prosecuting Authority is considering legal action after an affidavit in the VBS Mutual Bank case was leaked to the media.
The affidavit, provided by former VBS chairperson Tshifhiwa Matodzi, detailed how the EFF and its leaders allegedly benefitted from the now-defunct mutual bank.
Matodzi detailed how he met EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu at a penthouse in Sandton in 2017 to discuss the payments.
NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said the leak undermines the administration of justice and places members of the investigating team in danger.
"The leaking of confidential documents in high-profile and complex corruption cases like VBS compromises the hard work of investigators and prosecutors.

"This work involves a multipronged and long-term prosecution-guided strategy requiring the utmost discretion and confidentiality, including in the handling of documents and cooperation agreements with accused persons," said Mhaga.
He added that the NPA’s leadership had instructed the Director of Public Prosecutions in Pretoria to do a thorough investigation into the matter.
"This undermines the administration of justice and places several individuals, including members of the investigation and prosecution team, in danger.
"The NPA is considering legal options in this regard," he added.
