NHI to 'ensure quality healthcare for all'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Department of Health says with the implementation of the National Health Insurance, citizens of the country should have quality, affordable healthcare services regardless of their finances.
The department says its investigations revealed that the cost of healthcare in the private sector was too high, while quality in the public sector needed to improve.
Spokesperson Joe Maila says the department is dealing with problems identified in the National Development Plan.
"The National Health Insurance is our way of making sure that we implement what the World Health Organisation has called universal health coverage.
"That means therefore that we need to make sure that the citizens of this country - as well as in all countries of the world which are implementing universal health coverage - should have access to quality, affordable healthcare, regardless of the size of their pockets," he said.
