A Newcastle man has begun serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting his neighbour's six-year-old child.
On Monday, the 58-year-old was sentenced in the Madadeni Regional Court for the October 2018 incident in Osizweni.
It is understood the girl was on her way to play with friends when the man called her and gave her money to buy him cigarettes.
He then grabbed her and pulled her inside his house when she returned and threatened her not to tell anyone about the ordeal.
The man was arrested after the girl's grandmother noticed a change in her behaviour and took her to the clinic, where it was confirmed, she had been raped.

NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said it was revealed in court that the incident significantly affected the child academically, emotionally, and physically.
"The complainant and the accused were neighbours and were known to each other. In addition to the sentence, the court found the man unsuitable to work with children.
"Also, the court ordered that his name is entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders."
