New eThekwini and Msunduzi mayors expected to be made known tomorrow
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The clock is ticking for the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.
The party has committed to announcing new mayors for the eThekwini and Msunduzi municipalities tomorrow.
Any announcement will follow a week-long recruitment process. This after Zandile Gumede and Themba Njilo were stripped of their mayoral chains at eThekwini and Msunduzi respectively.
The ANC told reporters last week that all its members serving on the Executive Committees at the two municipalities would be redeployed. The party said the decision was based on performance.
Msunduzi has been placed under administration, while Gumede is facing corruption-related charges linked to a 2016 waste removal tender.
"The basic issue here is that there is no service delivery on the ground because of their internal squabbles. The running of the council has been disrupted because of their infighting," he said.
"We want them to correct what they are doing so that people get services."
In a statement, the eThekwini says the Council and Administration are still fully functional.
Councillor Fawzia Peer says the transition will not have a negative impact on service delivery.
