The painting shows former President Nelson Mandela being sodomised by President Jacob Zuma.

In an official statement, the foundation has acknowledged  Mabulu's right to freedom of expression but says the depiction of the late statesman is distasteful.

South Africans have also shared their thoughts on social media, criticising the artwork.

ANC spokesperson Khusela Sangoni said Mabulu was exploiting the craft of creative art.

"Whilst we respect Mabulu's freedom of expression, we find his work grotesque, inflammatory and of bad taste," he said.

In 2015, President Jacob Zuma was the subject of one painting entitled 'The Pornography of Power' showing Zuma's genitals and the so-called rape of the country - another piece that was the centre of controversy.
