NCC recalls Ford Transit, Tourneo vehicles over battery gas risk
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
The recall affects 582 Ford Transit and Ford Tourneo Custom vehicles from the 2022 to 2026 model range.
The National Consumer Commission has announced a recall of two commercial vehicles made by Ford.
The recall affects 582 Ford Transit and Ford Tourneo Custom vehicles from the 2022 to 2026 model range.
The multi-utility vehicles were sold across South Africa between 2021 and 2025.
The commission says the issue is linked to the battery, which may produce an acidic smell – similar to that of rotten eggs.
It says the supplier has informed them that higher temperatures could trigger a chemical reaction in the battery, releasing hydrogen sulphide gas.

There may also be a hissing sound or even visible gas coming from the battery.
It is warning that the chemical substance may pose a health risk if occupants are exposed to it over a long period.
Motorists who own affected vehicles are being urged to take them to their nearest authorised Ford dealership.
Repairs will be carried out at no cost to the consumer.
Lexus recall
A recall affecting certain models of Lexus cars has been announced. Officials say they have identified defects in the automatic transmission system.
Lexus is recalling the LX500D-FSport and LX500D Overtrail vehicles that were distributed between 13 March 2025 and 16 January 2026.
About 110 units have been identified in the South African market.
What is the issue?
The National Consumer Commission says a fault in the 10-speed transmission could lead to over-revving, possible damage, and even loss of power at high speeds.
In some cases, it could also cause fluid leaks, increasing the risk of a crash or fire.
The commission is urging owners to take their cars to an authorised Lexus dealership for a free software update.
Last month, BMW recalled hundreds of thousands of cars due to a fire risk.
