N3 currently open to traffic, motorists to drive carefully
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Traffic authorities are still urging motorists to drive cautiously if they're travelling through areas affected by adverse weather this weekend.
The N3 Toll Concession says the busy route between the coast and Johannesburg remains open to traffic at the moment.
The concession's Con Roux says they are concerned about the current heavy rain and cold conditions which could see roads ice over tonight.
"Our advice to motorists would be - at this stage - to avoid travelling at night but at the moment the N3 itself is open and there are no incidents to report," he said.
Roux is also urging those who have to travel to make all the necessary arrangements to ensure they're prepared for any possible road closures.
"Its absolutely imperative for people to be prepared for the eventuality of a possible closure. It could happen, weather conditions could change or we could see an accident occurring in terms of which the road is closed.
"Should that happen and motorists is caught up in a backlog in icy conditions particularly at night, it's imperative for them to be prepared with food, refreshments and medication," he said.
Parts of the Berg, Kokstad and the Midlands were blanketed in snow this weekend following a strong cold front.
The R617 in Underberg, the R74 near Bergville and the R612 to Impendle have been closed due to the snow.
