The 21-year-old was shot in her residence last week allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, Thabani Mzolo.

He's due back in court tomorrow. The university's vice chancellor, Enoch Malaza has extended their condolences.

"We are saddened that this is the seventh child to be lost by that family. We are still in direct contact with them. We will be meeting them again on Thursday as the court case is continuing on that day. We are giving full support to our students too," Mzolo said.

Meanwhile, questions have been raised around student security and how a firearm found its way into the residence.

The university says they are beefing up security and fitting all of its off-campus residences, with metal detectors or scanners.

Malaza briefed members of the media on the university's safety plans going forward.

"We have engaged our internal audit [team] - to immediately conduct an audit to ascertain how those minimum standards were breached. We have written to landlords now to install scanners or metal detectors in all our outsourced residences They have responded positively and are willing to install these devices as a matter of urgency," he said.
