Mugabe played a crucial role against apartheid: Mbeki
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
The late Robert Mugabe played a pivotal role in the ANC's fight against apartheid.
Former President Thabo Mbeki spoke at a memorial service at the Durban City Hall for Zimbabwe's former leader yesterday.

Mbeki said Mugabe and the Zimbabwean government helped the ANC transport weapons from Zambia to South Africa."The Zimbabwean Defence Force actually moved a battalion of their army to the banks of the Limpopo river. The reason was that we could then bring in weapons from Zambia into Zimbabwe so that our people could come into Zimbabwe without carrying weapons, only to collect them on the banks of the river," explained Mbeki.
There will be more ANC-hosted services to honour Mugabe's memory in parts of the country in the next few weeks.
Mugabe died earlier this month in a Singaporean hospital.
He was 95-years-old.
