Mthembu described as 'exemplary leader' as tributes pour in

Tributes and messages of condolences are pouring in for Jackson Mthembu.

The 62-year-old passed away from COVID-19 complications on Thursday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa led the tributes, describing the Mpumalanga born politician as an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy.

“He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss,” Ramaphosa said.

Mthembu spent over two decades in key positions with the African National Congress.

Between 1995 and 1997, he served as the National Spokesperson for the party under former president, Nelson Mandela.

He was first appointed the to ANC National Executive in 2007.

He also served as the Chief Whip of the party in parliament and was appointed by Ramaphosa as his Minister in the Presidency following the 2019 elections. 

Ronald Lamola, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services said, “You swore to serve and be faithful to our Constitution and you did just that and more. Lala ngoxolo Mvelase , a big tree has fallen. Hamba Kahle.”

While the Nelson Mandela Foundation said the news of Mthembu’s passing deeply moved them. 

“He will be missed. We respected his leadership in good times and in bad. Our condolences to his family, his friends and his comrades. May his soul rest in peace,” the foundation said.

Leader of the Democratic Alliance, John Steenhuisen said it was an honor to serve alongside a ‘true South African patriot’.

“Condolences to his family and friends and the colleagues in his party. May his soul rest in peace,” Steenhuisen said.

Floyd Shivambu, Deputy President of the Economic Freedom Fighters also took to social media to pay his respects.

“Rest in Peace Cde Jackson Mthembu. You often rose above factionalism and narrow partisan politics. Your legacy includes the fact that as Chief Whip of the Majority party you guided your caucus to vote for a journey towards amendment of section 25 to allow for expropriation of land,” Shivambu said.
