Msunduzi says main power lines have been tampered with and it believes disgruntled municipal workers in the electricity department are to blame.

Some residents have also been venting their frustration and anger out on the streets over the outages.

Msunduzi says it's had to hire independent contractors to fix the lines and restore power, but it's now not clear when that will be.

Currently, areas including Sweetwaters and Hilton are affected.

Cogta MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the department has approached police to investigate the matter.

"We have received a report that there are workers that are disgruntled and we have forwarded it to the police, asking them to ensure that people that are [behind] the sabotage are arrested. We have also dispatched our engineering team from Cogta to go and assist where we can, to ensure that we restore services to all the communities that are affected," she said.

Meanwhile officials in Mooi River, say electricity has been fully restored after a substation was set alight on Sunday night.

Municipal Manager, Max Moyo say power was restored to affected areas by the early hours of Tuesday.
