Motsoaledi announces policy review in wake of Health Ombud’s KZN report

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi appointed 16 experts to review policies after a probe found major challenges affecting healthcare workers.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says a team of 16 experts has been appointed to review departmental policies that may be contributing to systemic challenges in the public health system.
The Health Ombud today released a report of the joint probe into the deaths of six health professionals at KZN public hospitals.
They include intern doctor - Alulutho Mazwi and Dr Francis Idika who were based at Umlazi's Prince Mshiyeni Hospital and Vryheid Hospital respectively - and died just weeks apart last year.
It was claimed at the time that they were subjected to workplace bullying and intimidation.
Their widely report who was based at five other KZN medical professionals to workplace bullying, victimisation or adverse working conditions at public health facilities.

Health Ombud Professor Taole Mokoena says they found no evidence linking any of the six deaths to conditions at their places of work.
But he says the investigation uncovered significant challenges affecting healthcare professionals such as ongoing staff shortages, excessive workloads, resource constraints and inadequate employee wellness support and security concerns.
Minister Motsoaledi says they attending to these challenges...
" I have appointed a team of 16 experts to review HR policies which has been established from 1994 because we are living in a different era to find out what is the effect of these policies to some of these occurrences about shortages and all that. What policies have we put that needs to be changed?
"They are reviewing them and I was expecting the first report this month of July"
