The price adjustments were announced by the Energy Department last week.

Both grades of petrol now cost 43 and 44 cents more a litre from today.

All diesel is up by 23 cents a litre while motorists will have to fork out 22 cents more for illuminating paraffin.

The department's Robert Maake, has explained the reasons behind the decision.

"We think that even though the rand strengthens against the dollar during the period under review, the average during the period under review was still higher than the average of the previous period and that contributed to the hike," he said.
