Most KZN libraries back online: Arts and Culture

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture says allegations that some 141 libraries in the province have been without Internet access since April last year are miscalculated and outdated.

HOD Ntokozo Chonco has been reacting to a statement issued by the DA earlier in the week.

The party claims many communities are suffering because of the slow pace at which the department is addressing the issue.

Chonco says of the 141 state libraries that were affected, 108 have been back online since October last year.

He says the libraries were offline due to contractor issues.

"We started the process of appointing a new contractor but, as we were going through the process we realised as the department that certain processes were not followed properly."

"We had to restart the process," explained Chonco.

The department says the remaining libraries should have their Internet connections restored by the end of the month.
