More than 2 000 unsafe taxis to be taken off the roads
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Taxi council Santaco in KZN says it will rally behind the Transport Department’s programme to scrap unroadworthy taxis.
Santaco says it has submitted a list of all vehicles that the department needs to take off the roads. Office manager Sifiso Shangase believes the programme will help reduce the number of preventable crashes.
"Commuters will now get vehicles which are newer, safer and break down less on the roads", he said.
"People will also have a better seating experience because operators will be obliged to purchase the safer new minibus models", Shangase said.
Minister Fikile Mbalula re-launched the programme after a one year break on Friday.
Mbalula says a total of 1 464 taxis and 1000 illegally converted panel vans will be scrapped.
