Mkhize reveals Covid-19 hospitalisation and new cases have risen by 17%

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says in the last seven days, there has been an increase of 17% of people receiving medical help in hospitals for Covid-19 complications.

The minister released his daily Covid-19 statement on Tuesday evening in which he sounds the alarm bells over the grip that coronavirus is once again getting on the country and the looming third wave.

South Africa has also seen a 17% increase in new cases compared to the seven days prior. 

"Nationally, the new test positivity rate has shown a positive percentage increase compared to seven days prior, with all nine provinces showing increases in new test positivity rates.

"Nationally, as of 25th of May 2021, there has been a 17% increase in hospitalisations compared to seven days prior," says Mkhize. 

A total of 3 084 new Covid-19 cases have been reported in the 24 hours up to Tuesday evening.  

Mkhize says there are currently 41 005 active cases across the country. 

He adds this reflects a 0.69% increase in active cases over the past 24 hours.

"The national case fatality rate as of 25th of May 2021 is 3.4%. The total cumulative number of deaths 55 976 reflecting an increase of 102 reported deaths as of 6 pm. Of the reported deaths 25,5% (26) occurred in the past 48 hours," says Mkhize.
