Speaking at the 2026 Reed Dance in Pongola, the monarch also expressed concern that KwaZulu-Natal remains among the provinces with high GBV cases.
AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini says there is still a very long way to go in tackling gender-based violence.
The monarch addressed attendees gathered at the 2026 Reed Dance at the eMashobeni Royal Palace in Pongola on Saturday.
Alcohol a contributing factor
He singled out alcohol as one of the contributing factors, using himself as an example.
In this regard, the king was referring to the fact that he once used strong language against one of his wives, Queen Nomzamo Myeni, while under the influence of alcohol.
The monarch added that it hurts him even more that KwaZulu-Natal is always among the leading provinces for GBV cases.
Meanwhile, the provincial government has praised this year’s annual reed dance and has pledged to continue supporting the cultural event.
During his speech, Premier Thami Ntuli had a message for the king.
“Your Majesty, as your government, like other years, we have supported this event with different departments playing a role. I am also grateful municipalities have also contributed to its success.”
Ntuli says the annual commemoration is also important for the local economy.
“These tents, which thousands of our maidens sleep in and other infrastructure here is usually provided by local businesses.”
