Missing boy found dead after KZN drowning incident
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
KZN police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a nine-year-old boy was discovered at St Michaels Lagoon on the south coast yesterday.
It's understood the boy went missing on Saturday night.
Authorities began their search immediately but tragically were unable to find him.
The National Sea Rescue Institute joined recovery efforts the following morning.
While the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy are still unknown, Leon Gabarde from lifeguard service Tower 13 says many children are left unattended on beaches at this time of year.
"The other sad, sad reality is that so many young children are being left unattended to swim in lagoons and to swim in kiddies' pools. Every person can't be watched by a lifeguard.
"So when there's 500 kids swimming in a lagoon that is manned by three lifeguards - those kids' parents should also be watching [them]," he said.
Meanwhile, a man drowned in a separate incident at Albert Falls Dam, north of Pietermaritzburg yesterday.
Police search and rescue officers were called to the dam after he failed to surface after jumping into the water from a height.
