Mido Macia cops sentenced to 15 years
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The eight policemen who killed Mozambican national Mido Macia have each been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the North Gauteng High Court.
They were found guilty in August of Macia's murder.
In February 2013 the taxi driver was handcuffed to the back of a police van and dragged through the streets of Daveyton east of Johannesburg.
He died later in a police holding cell.
While sentencing the group earlier, Judge Bert Bam today said life imprisonment would not be appropriate because the eight had excellent service records.
NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku says they welcome the sentence.
''The NPA welcomes the sentence. We think that the sentence is in the interest of justice.
''It dispels the notion of impunity where government officials have got some standing in society,'' he said.
