Metro cop accused of killing ex-girlfriend Zinhle Muthwa to apply for bail

The Durban Metro policeman who allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend on New Year's Day will apply for bail next week.

Ndumiso Khumalo, 30, made his first appearance in the Umbumbulu Magistrates Court on Monday morning. 


Khumalo is accused of shooting and killing Zinhle Muthwa, 29, and dumping her body at the Ndaya Reserve on the South Coast.

He made a brief appearance in court, which was packed with emotional family members and angry protestors. 


Newswatch was told that Khumalo has been working as a Metro police officer for the past five years.


State prosecutor, Spho Nhlanhla told the court that Khumalo is facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. 


Khumalo also opted for a private attorney who was present at court. 


Nhlanhla told the court that the State would be opposing bail. 


Khumalo will be held at Westville prison until his appearance next week.


Outside court, Muthwa’s father, Martin, told reporters that the family are heartbroken and were hoping for swift justice.

Muthwa who is from Dududu on the south coast was last seen leaving her New Germany home on New Year's Eve. 


Her body was found dumped on a roadside with a gunshot wound to the head on New Years Day.
