"The importance of this is to diagnose the problems learners experience and to see how we can improve future teaching and learning," says UKZN's Vimolan Mudaly.

Mudaly has been commenting on the Basic Education Minister's plans to review the requirements for passing the Grade 12 exam.

Siviwe Gwarube plans to appoint a council of experts, unions, and school bodies to look into the bare minimum scores.

She says the entire system needs to be examined, with literacy and numeracy at the forefront of learning.

To pass matric, a student must obtain at least 40% in their home language and in two other subjects, as well as at least 30% in three additional subjects.

Mudaly also points out the significance of improving comprehension for the country to make significant progress in passing the test.

"We need to solve the problem of poor understanding and learner lack of knowledge. Clearly, when students don't perform well, it means that their understanding is poor. So, at the grassroots level, that is what we should start to improve."
