Maritzburg College mourns death of pupil
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
Tributes are pouring in for a Maritzburg College pupil who died in a motorbike accident over the weekend.
Sixteen-year-old Daniel Janneker was killed in the crash on the N3 between Nottingham Road and Balgowan on Saturday.
Paramedics said another person who sustained moderate injuries was taken to hospital.
In a statement, the school praised Daniel for his dedication to their cycling team, where he earned honours.
Teacher Kerry Bartholomew said the news broke during a cross-country cycling event while many of his friends were racing.
"We hadn't told them whilst they were racing, but once they had come off the track, their parents were there to break the news to those individuals.
”They were absolutely devastated, shocked, heartbroken, and very difficult news to pass on to his coach as well."

Daniel has been described as a young man of exceptional character and integrity, known for his warm smile, quick wit, and sincerity.
Bartholomew said his death is an incredible loss to the school community.
"He was also a very level-headed individual who was years beyond what his age gives way to, and he'll be missed amongst many people," added Bartholomew.
