Mantashe: Police must focus despite corruption claims
Acting Police Minister Gwede Mantashe says the corruption allegations facing the police force must not distract officers from their core duty to protect and uphold the law.
He says he is confident that a commission of inquiry, set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa will pave the way for justice and accountability.
" The leadership of the police is under intense public scrutiny.
"We await the commencement of that process. [It is a] very important principle that if you are accused, you have a right, that you acquire immediately to actually clear your name [and] respond to the allegations. This appointment of the commission of inquiry affirms that principle."

Mantashe was tabling the police department's budget vote for the 2025/26 financial year at the National Council of Provinces on Thursday.
Mantashe, who is also serving as the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, took over the police portfolio after Senzo Mchunu was placed on special leave.
He and other senior officers have been accused by KZN Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of political interference in investigations.
