They have warned that the machine can be dangerous and poses a health risk if not handled correctly.
The armed group entered the company's premises this week and stole a number of items from the construction site.
Imraan Milase, a site agent for Stefannutti Stocks Civils KZN says the machine is used to test layer densities by spreading gamma rays into the soil to see how well compacted it is before structures are raised.
He says the machine is a very volatile and needs to be kept in a safe place at all times.
''Inside the machine itself, it's radio active, it is not meant to have anyone close to it because it has long term damages on people, you could be infertile from it or you could develop cancer even.
''Basically when you run the tests it sets out some gamma rays which might affect you that way. Even when it's on standby you need to store it in it's container because there's a potential of those gamma rays actually escaping,'' he said.
