Man rescued after spending the night trapped in Durban manhole
The incident has prompted a local councillor to call for an urgent probe into damaged manholes across the city.
A man has been rescued from an uncovered manhole in Durban North after falling in and spending the night injured and alone.
The man told emergency services he was walking along the road in Riverside at around 8pm on Monday when he slipped down the hole.
IPSS Medical Rescue's Samantha Meyrrick says passers-by heard his cries for help on Tuesday morning.
"He sustained one broken leg and was treated by IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Support Paramedics before being extricated by the eThekwini Fire Department and Durban Metro Police Search and Rescue.
"It was a very unfortunate accident and was probably preventable."
Accident raises safety concerns
Local councillor Heinz De Boer says he will ask the City's roads department to urgently investigate.
"Almost 90% of the cases of manholes being damaged are [caused] by trucks."
De Boer has urged residents to report any uncovered manholes in their areas.
