An elderly man has been killed in a car crash near the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Police confirmed in a statement that a man in his seventies had been driving into the airport precinct this morning when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a concrete pillar beneath a highway bridge.

Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Gauteng Saps spokesperson, Katlego Mogale says a case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigation.

Mogale says the name of the deceased has been withheld until his family has been notified.

Social media has been abuzz with speculation that the motorist had been a senior executive at the controversial Bosasa group.

News24 reported a short while ago that the vehicle the man had been driving was owned by the company.

However, police said they could not yet confirm details around its ownership.

Mogale says more details could be expected later this afternoon.

Bosasa, now the African Global Group, took centre stage at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.

Company executives were accused of giving government officials money and gifts in exchange for benefits.
